Thinking Ahead After a Tooth Extraction – Why Bone Grafting Matters

When a tooth needs to be removed, it’s important to think about what comes next—especially if the tooth isn’t a wisdom tooth. Wisdom teeth are located at the very back of the mouth, so once they’re removed, the area usually heals on its own without issue.

However, when other teeth are extracted, leaving the space empty can lead to changes you might not expect. Without a tooth in place, the jawbone in that area can begin to shrink or break down over time. This is a natural process, but it can cause nearby teeth to shift, change your bite, and even affect how you speak or chew.

What Is Bone Grafting?
To prevent bone loss, your dentist may recommend a bone graft which is a simple procedure that helps preserve the shape and strength of your jawbone after an extraction. It involves placing a small amount of bone material into the empty socket (performed on the same day as the extraction) to support the surrounding bone and tissue during healing.

Bone grafting is especially helpful if you're considering:

Dental Implants
Dental implants need a solid, healthy foundation because the implant is placed directly into your jawbone. If there isn’t enough bone, the implant won't stay secure. A bone graft helps rebuild the area so that the implant can be placed properly and has the strength and stability it needs to last. Think of it as laying a strong foundation before building a house.

Dental Bridges:
A bridge relies on the teeth next to the empty space to hold it in place. If the bone around those teeth shrinks or shifts, the bridge may not fit properly or last as long. A bone graft helps keep the surrounding teeth stable and preserves the natural contour of your gums, so your bridge fits more securely and looks more natural.

Dentures:
Dentures rest directly on your gums and jawbone. If the bone shrinks too much, the denture can become loose, uncomfortable, or difficult to keep in place. Bone grafting helps maintain enough bone structure for a better-fitting, more comfortable denture, especially for full or partial dentures.
