Post-Op Instructions

What to Expect After Your Dental Procedure

We know dental work can be a little nerve-wracking, but we’re here to make your recovery as smooth and comfortable as possible. After your procedure, it’s important to follow the care instructions we give you. This helps you heal quickly and reduces the chance of complications.

A general rule: After any dental procedure that requires numbing, wait one to two hours before eating. This gives the numbing effects time to wear off. Eating too soon can cause you to accidentally bite your cheek or tongue without realizing it.

Below you'll find some general recovery tips for specific procedures. Don’t worry, we’ll also give you personalized instructions before you leave our office.

Root Canal Therapy
It’s normal to feel some soreness for a few days after a root canal. To help the area heal:

Avoid chewing on the treated side until your permanent filling or crown is placed.

You may be prescribed antibiotics, make sure to take them as directed.

Call us if you feel increasing pain, swelling, or if your temporary filling comes out.

Crowns & Bridges
Before your permanent crown or bridge is ready, you’ll have a temporary one. Temporaries are more delicate, so:

Brush gently and floss carefully (slide the floss out instead of lifting).

Avoid sticky or chewy foods that could loosen the temporary.

Some sensitivity is normal. Try a warm salt water rinse or take Tylenol or Advil if needed.

Once your permanent crown or bridge is placed, it may feel a little different at first — that’s totally normal. Your bite should feel natural within a week. Let us know if it doesn’t.

Keep brushing and flossing daily just like you do with your natural teeth.

Fillings & Bondings
After your filling, your teeth may be sensitive, especially to hot or cold, for a few days. This is normal and you can take Tylenol or Advil if needed.

Avoid very hot or cold food and drinks for a bit.

Resume your regular brushing and flossing routine, good care helps your filling last longer.

Scaling and Root Planing
After a deep cleaning, your gums may feel a little sore or swollen. Here’s how to feel better:

Rinse with warm salt water (1 teaspoon salt in 8 oz. of water) 2–3 times a day.

Brush and floss gently to keep the area clean.

Use a cold compress and over-the-counter pain relief if needed.

Avoid hard or crunchy foods for a few days.

If you notice any swelling, pain, or stiffness that doesn’t go away, give us a call.

Veneers
You’ll start with a temporary veneer before your permanent one is placed. During this time:

Brush gently and avoid flossing in a way that could pull at the temporary (slide the floss out instead of lifting).

Stay away from sticky or chewy foods.

It’s normal to feel some sensitivity or irritation, and a warm salt water rinse can help. Once the permanent veneer is in, it may feel a bit unfamiliar at first, but your bite should feel normal in a few days. Let us know if it doesn’t.

Be sure to brush and floss daily, paying special attention around the gumline where the veneer meets your tooth.

Extractions
After a tooth is removed, rest is key.

Keep gauze on the area and change it if it becomes soaked.

If bleeding lasts more than 24 hours, contact us right away.

Rest with your head propped up to minimize bleeding and swelling.

Take any prescribed medication as directed and use an ice pack for discomfort.

Avoid spitting and rinsing, especially the first 24 hours.

Eat soft foods for a few days (like yogurt, mashed potatoes, soup, or pudding).

No straws! The suction can dislodge the healing clot. Avoid smoking for the same reason.

If the area isn’t healing well or you’re in pain after a few days, give us a call.

Dental Implants

You may have some swelling, tenderness, or mild bleeding after surgery. This is normal and should improve within a few days.

Use gauze to control bleeding, and apply an ice pack for 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling.

Rest with your head slightly elevated and avoid physical activity for the first 24 hours.

Stick to soft foods for a few days, and chew on the opposite side of your mouth if possible.

Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods while the area heals.

Keep your mouth clean by gently rinsing with warm salt water (start the day after surgery), but do not spit forcefully or use a straw.

Brush your other teeth normally, but be gentle around the implant site.

If you notice ongoing pain, swelling that worsens, or any signs of infection, please reach out to us right away.
